iFest 2k18 – Tech Conference on Information Security and Emerging Trends

“iFest 2018”, organized by the UCSC – ISACA Student Group with close partnership with the ISACA Sri Lanka Chapter on the 13th of May 2018 was the most awaited tech conference on Information Security and emerging trends. The event commenced at 9.00 a.m. by giving a short introduction regarding the nature of the programme. The New Arts Theatre of the University of Colombo, was filled with over 400 students from both private and state higher educational institutes from all over the island.

Initially, the gathering was addressed by Dr. Rasika Dayaratne, the lecturer in charge of UCSC – ISACA Student Group. Afterwards, Mr. Sithira Wanniarachchi, vice president of the Sri Lanka ISACA Chapter gave a small introduction about ISACA. Representing the Platinum sponsor for the event, UPay; Mr.Rasindu Croos & Mr.Asela Wikramasooriya introduced their product and its features.

The event consisted of four main sessions. The first session was done by Mr. Malinda Alahakoon; lecturer and youtuber, on “Cyber Crimes and Cyber Terrorism” which was a very interactive session which gave us a wonderful insight into the cyber world and threats related to it.

The second session was on “Malware and Ransomeware”, an amazing session done by Mr. Sujit Christy. He is  a governance, risk & compliance professional and a passionate information and cybersecurity adoption evangelist. He shared his knowledge on Cryptography and also how to overcome threats of malware and ransomware.

The third session which was on “Blockchain in cyber security” which helped us gain knowledge on how to enhance cyber-defence as the platform can prevent fraudulent activities via consensus mechanism. This rather informative session was conducted by Mr. Priyal Walpita.

The fourth and the final session was conducted by Mr. Uditha Wijesundara, IT Director of ISM APAC. The theme was  “Deep web” also known as “Hidden web”, which include contents that are not indexed by standard web search engines.

Each session was wrapped up with a quiz, where the audience was given a chance to answer the questions asked by the speakers and the winners were awarded with valuable prizes. The event concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by the President of UCSC ISG, Sajitha Gimash Liyanage.
