University Rankings
There are numerous university, discipline and programme ranking sites around the world. One of the better known ones (albeit possibly US-Centric) is http://www.usnews.com/sections/rankings/index.html. Among its contents you can find for instance:
- Overal best universities in the world
- World's best universities in Engineering and IT
- Best Computer Science graduate schools in the US
- among others...
GPA Conversion in USA
In case students (especially 3 year degree holders and those with 4 year degrees but without classes) need to map their grades to the US system (favourably usually) they can use the service below. I think it costs some Rs. 20k.
Sachintha has been successful in obtaining a TAship using this method because (a) he has no class in 4 year degree, (b) he wanted to do postgrad in CS not stats.
Ivy league (and even 2nd tier?) universities may not accept this mapping, but the lower end ones seem to.
Here's an extract of an email from Sachintha Pitigala from Department of Stats, who used this service and got admission in the US.
GPA Mapping - World Education Services:

Here are some universities which are asked to do WES evaluation;
- Middle Tennessee State University
- Sam Houston Sate University
- University of North Florida
- University of west Georgia
If some University wants to evaluate your GPA using WES or some other educational institutes they specially mention it as follows.

Postgrad Study in Australia
Here's an email from Niroshinie Fernando who graduated from the UCSC around 2008... using a rather non-standard way of going through a local agent!
Here are the details of the education agent I went through in my post grad application process: Aspirations Education (pvt) Ltd, No. 267/20, Samagi Mawatha, Nawala Road, Nawala. Tel : 0115030103
We (applicants) don't have to pay them anything - they get paid by the university. But if there are things to courier and/or application fees etc, we have to pay that cost. They're also helpful in getting the student visa as they advice on preparing the application and handle the process.
When I first talked to them about doing post grads in Australia, they gave me some contacts in universities. Then I talked to those faculty members ( in addition to ones I had come across by myself through googling) and sent them some of the research proposals I had written. Of course from that point, it's up to us.
I've also attached some slides I made in request to some of the juniors. Feel free to pass them on to anyone you think might need them :)
Best regards,
